Courage Is a Muscle …My Thought for the Day…May 31, 2019

Courage Is a Muscle suzygoebel.com/blog

“We don’t develop courage by being happy every day.  We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.”

Barbara De Angelis

Courage Is a Muscle

Courage is a muscle.  And like any muscle, it needs to be developed and used or it can go flabby.  When we survive a difficult time or challenge adversity, generally we can feel proud of that and it helps to grow our courage.

But what about the not so difficult times?  I have found in my life, as I have settled into my own comfortable routine, that my courage muscle has gone flabby.  Things I once wouldn’t have batted an eye at seem to scare me more now than ever.  I was talking to my sister earlier and lamenting how the older you get the goofier you get, and she agreed!

Challenge the Fear

So, what is the answer?  Well, you can stay afraid and hide in routine and safe pursuits, or you can challenge your fears.  I don’t mean skydiving or bungee jumping, but if that’s what you want to do, more power to you!

I am thinking more baby steps to start.  Identify a small fear you may have, be it going to a crowded store, or driving on the highway.  Then play it out in your mind, like you are actually doing it.  How do you feel?  A little anxious?  That’s ok!  Do you think maybe you could challenge this fear and go for that drive?  How about you set a limit, such as, ‘I will get on the highway and drive, but I will allow myself, no questions asked, to get off at the nearest exit if I need to’.  And see how it goes.  You might find you don’t want to get off, and that driving can be fun.

Either way, be gentle with yourself, the fears are very real.  And every step you take to conquer them are a victory, and should be celebrated as such.  If you can tackle one small fear a day, or every couple of days you will find your courage growing like the muscle it is!  And if not, again, be gentle with yourself, you will when you are ready.

What small fear will you conquer today?

Givers and Takers…My Thought for the Day…May 29, 2019

suzygoebel.com/blog Marlos Thomas givers and takers
May 29, 2019

“My father said there were two kinds of people in the world.  Givers and takers.  The takers may eat better, but the givers sleep better.”

-Marlo Thomas

‘Givers’ and ‘Takers’

This quote is by actress Marlo Thomas, the daughter of Danny Thomas.  Who was an actor and the founder of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.  St. Jude is the patron saint of hopeless causes.  And St. Jude’s Hospital takes all children, with their families NEVER seeing a bill for care, housing or food, because St. Jude’s believes all the family should worry about is helping their child to live.

I remember when I was 9 or 10 doing a fundraiser, through school I am guessing, for this hospital and it just stuck in me.  I have always loved Danny Thomas since then.   And I am sure I didn’t even know the whole story as I do now.  But I think I could sense the goodness and the rightness in it all.  I would say the Thomas’s are definitely ‘givers’!

We all know some ‘takers’ in our lives.  They take without regret and give nothing back.  They take as though they are entitled to take.  I pity them, as they haven’t experienced the immensely wonderful feeling of giving and all that goes with it.

Life is meant to flow; energy is meant to circulate.  Like a convection current where heat rises, cools and then falls back down, only to be heated and rise again.  When you’re a ‘giver’ you experience a similar current, a similar flow.  It almost becomes self-propagating.

When you’re a ‘taker’ you do not, the energy stops with you, there is no ‘paying it forward.’  One day they will see, I am sure of it.  Once you get a taste of truly selfless giving you really can’t go back!

The Desire to Achieve…My Thought for the Day…May 22, 2019

“A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others”
Ayn Rand

The Desire to Achieve

Interesting quote today.  I am never quite sure what makes me pick a particular quote.  I search for quotes and grab the ones that strike a chord in me.  Then I create the graphic.  Most often, not really knowing what it is I am going to write about.

So, I am not even sure what this quote means, I do know I like it for whatever reason.  I have never been much of a competitive person, I am more the cheerleader type, cheering all on to win or achieve their goals.  I have never taken pleasure in ‘beating’ others or broadcasting the fact that I won.

Does this mean I am a creative person?  Does it mean creative versus destructive?  Is the desire to beat others an ultimately destructive desire?

What does it mean to you?  I’d really like to know!

Look Fear in the Face…My Thought for the Day…May 20, 2019

Look Fear in the Face Riddikulus suzygoebel.com/blog
May 20, 2019

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'”

Eleanor Roosevelt

Look Fear in the Face

How do we look fear in the face?  Maybe it is the simple acknowledgement or recognition of the fear.  Then simply carrying on instead of letting that fear turn us into a puddle.  We can hardly compare the horrors of today to the horrors of the Great Depression and World War II.  But fear is just as real and relevant for us today, as it always has been.  Real or imagined, fear has a psychological power over us.

My favorite thing to think of when contemplating fear is from the Harry Potter books, the Boggart-Banishing spell.  A Boggart in the Harry Potter world takes on the form of your worst fear to defeat you or stop you.  The spell to defeat the Boggart is spoken out loud as Riddikulus’, thus rendering the Boggart into a ridiculous form that you can laugh at. Which is then ultimately powerless over you.  The idea is to laugh at the Boggart, laugh at your fear and the fear becomes powerless over you.

Most of our fears when we truly look at them are ridiculous, even if they don’t feel that way.   But facing them, acknowledging them is definitely the first step.  If you can go a step further and make them comical even better!

So, try saying it, or at least think it, Riddikulus’!!   I guarantee it can take some of the weight out your fear.

Believe in Yourself…My Thought for the Day…May 15, 2019

Believe in Yourself suzygoebel.com/blog
May 15, 2019

“Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you can imagine.”
-Roy T. Bennett

Believe in Yourself

Why is it so hard to be able to believe in yourself and what you are capable of?  I struggle with this daily.  Is it because I am too much in my head?  Do I think too much about how much braver I wish I could be, or where my talents and capabilities might be lacking in this moment?

Most of us will experience a lack of faith in our abilities from time to time.  It is normal and human.  But some of us, myself included, become somewhat paralyzed by this while others can brush it off and move forward.

There is no point in wishing we could be braver.  The only solution is to just be braver.  So, now you might be saying, ‘well, that’s my problem, thanks for your crap solution!’  I guess my point is to get out of your head and just do it, which is cliché but appropriate.

The reason some people can brush off their doubts and fears is because they don’t think about them too much.  The more you think about them, the more weight you give to them, and the harder they are to overcome.   I believe it is called ‘paralysis by analysis.’

Have you ever gone ahead and done something you didn’t think you could do?  Do you remember the amazing feeling after you accomplished it?  Draw on that!  Sometimes we just need to plunge ahead and have faith that all will work out.   And it usually does in one way or another.  Granted not always the way we had hoped, but usually to our benefit in the long run.

Opportunities or Obstacles?…My Thought for the Day…May 13, 2019

Opportunities or Obstacles suzygoebel.com/blog
May 13, 2019

“If you believe it will work out, you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t, you will see obstacles.”
Wayne Dyer

Opportunities or Obstacles?

It is all about perspective isn’t it?  Are you a glass half full or a glass half empty sort?  Do you see opportunities in your life or obstacles? Of course, it is so much easier said than done.  Our outlook is programmed from birth by life and gets more hard wired the longer we live.

Overcoming a negative attitude can sometimes seem insurmountable, but it can be done.  One piece at a time, one step at a time.  Recognizing it is the first stage, and a hard one at that.  No one wants to believe they are a glass half empty type.  But acknowledgement is the first step. Then taking that negative thought or attitude and consciously turning it around.

This is hard at first and can seem overwhelming, but again, you take it a piece at a time.  It doesn’t happen overnight.  But it does happen.  As you consciously tackle negative thoughts, attitudes and beliefs and turn them around it becomes easier.  Like a muscle, your ability grows.

And before you know it, people will start seeing you as a more positive person.  And life seems to get a bit easier when it is fueled with positivity rather than negativity.  It is like having the wind at your back, the whole way.  And soon, you will be seeing opportunities rather than obstacles!

Appreciating What We Have …My Thought for the Day…May 8, 2019

If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more.
If you look at what you don’t have in life,
you’ll never have enough.
Oprah Winfrey

Appreciating What We Have

It is so easy to get caught up focusing on what we don’t have at the moment without appreciating what we do have.  Wishing for more never really leads to feeling good, at least in my experience!

When I find myself in this state, I really try to focus on what I do have, right here and now.  Clothes to wear, food to eat, a place to lay head.  The fact that I can wash my clothes at my house and don’t have to go to the laundromat anymore.  That is huge for me 😂.

Practicing gratitude for what we already have is also such a great exercise for helping to get out of a slump.  Simply listing all things you are grateful for is really quite powerful and can help you get out of a low mood.  Start with the basics if you have to.  Eyes to see, ears to hear, arms to hug with.  It usually begins to snowball from there.

You will ultimately see just how rich you already are!

My Thought for the Day…May 6, 2019

khalil gibran service is joy
May 6, 2019

“I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy.

I woke and I saw that life is all service.

I served and I saw that service is joy.”

Khalil Gibran

*this is a repost of Monday, May 6, 2019, somehow it disappeared and I had to repost.  Sorry for the confusion.

Service Is Joy

Service is joy.  How many years did it take me to realize this?  Contemplating this quote made it finally concrete in my mind.  Serving others has always made me feel immensely better than just serving myself.  The simple act of helping someone out.  The joy and thanks received from it. Which ultimately propels me and the recipient higher.  It is a win-win situation if I ever saw one.

I recently watched The Blues Brothers, an old movie from the 80’s again.  It is one of my all-time favorite movies.  It never ceases to lift me up with the amazing music and the quirky story.   So, one particular part, in the beginning, is when John Belushi is at a gospel church and the Reverend (who is played by James Brown no less) is yelling ‘do you see the light?’  ‘Do you see the light!!’ As John Belushi’s character is finally seeing the light by getting the band back together to raise the money to help the orphanage they grew up it.   He sees the way is ultimately service towards others rather than service towards self, or at least that is the message I received from it!

So, maybe “service is joy” isn’t true for everyone, but it definitely is for me!  I bet if you think long enough you will see it is probably true for you too.

Don’t Give It a Second Thought!…My Thought for the Day…May 1, 2019

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”
-Henry Ford

Don’t Give It a Second Thought!

Some days it just seems like everything is going wrong.  Like tripping up the stairs, it has a cascading effect.  You miss a step and trip, then you keep tripping.  You lose the smooth rhythm you usually have.  The more you trip, the madder you get, it’s just stairs, right?  Been doing this my whole life, what’s the problem now??  And the funny thing is, the more you try not to trip, you trip!  When you finally get out of your head, well that’s when you seem to be able to resume your normal stair climbing ability.

So, some days it does just seems like everything is going wrong.  But maybe it’s like the stair thing.  If we think about it too much, focus on what’s going wrong, we just keep tripping. Or stubbing our toe.  Or experiencing blocks at every turn. Then we ruminate on why everything is going wrong today and compounding it.  We are out of alignment.

Does the airplane complain about taking off into the wind?  Of course not, it’s a f*$%ing plane😉!  Maybe better put as, does the pilot complain about taking off into the wind?  Of course not, because he knows the plane is fully capable of this and this is how it’s done.  He doesn’t give it a second thought.

Let me repeat that, he doesn’t give it a second thought.  He just plows ahead with the assumption that everything will work out.

You Can Do It!

via GIPHY

The same thing happens to me every time I sit down to write these posts.  I stare at the graphic, read the quote over and over and lament why did I start this 😂?  But then I just get out of my head and start writing the first thing that pops into my mind.  It can always be changed, right?  But that starts the snowball and then somehow, I end up writing a post I am pretty happy with.  It never ceases to amaze, me every time!

So, the next time you find yourself tripping up the proverbial stairs, try to get out of your head and have a little faith!  You can do it!
