“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”
-Zig Ziglar

Starting is Hard

Starting is hard.   Every time I sit down to make these posts, I have a hard time getting started. Making the graphic is the easier and more enjoyable part.  I could make these graphics all day, everyday!  But the writing is where I must stretch myself.

Doubts creep in, will I have anything worthwhile to say?  Who am I to be saying such things in the first place?

But I make myself start typing, the first thing that comes into my head.  And like the pond in the graphic, the one small ripple gains power and strength and makes more ripples.  And somehow, the words come.

Starting anything that has an unknown factor is even harder.  But the idea is the same.   A step in the right direction to get the ball rolling usually leads to more steps and can break our inertia of fear and doubt.

You won’t be great to start, that is for sure.  But like Zig said, you do have to start to be great.

Have a great week!

Doubts Are a Funny Thing…My Thought for the Day…April 12, 2019

suzygoebel.com/blog Doubts Are a Funny Thing
April 12, 2019

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.”
-Franklin D. Roosevelt

Doubts Are a Funny Thing

Doubts are a funny thing.  One the one hand they are good, serving as a barometer.  Having doubts shows you are questioning and reasoning, working things out, using your mind.  But doubts can also take over all reasonable thinking and cripple us into inaction.  Or worse, cause us to abandon an idea, goal, or project prematurely.

The key is to use the tool of doubt, but not to let it use you.  Easier said than done!  When I have doubts, I find it is helpful to talk them out with a trusted friend.  Getting them out of my head and allowing someone else to help me dissect them is really helpful.   In the absence of a good friend, just writing about them helps to, and helps to clarify what the next steps are.

Doubts are just a red flag our wonderful brains throw up to alert us that we might not have thought something through enough.    Doubts encourage us to explore further, sometimes finding a better path to our goals we had not previously considered.  Doubts also can signal that we are on the wrong path entirely, and that’s ok too.  Use your doubts as a tool, don’t let them use you!

Have a great weekend!

The Company You Keep…My Thought for the Day…April 11, 2019

suzygoebel.com/blog the company you keep
April 11, 2019

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.

Small people always do that,

but really great make you feel that you too, can become great.”

Mark Twain

The Company You Keep

Be careful of the company you keep they say. I remember a saying from when I was a kid, ‘you can’t soar like an eagle if hang around with turkeys.’  It was hard to understand then, but I think it basically was what Mark Twain was saying.

Surround yourself with people who support your ambitions, people who support you. Remove the haters and the naysayers from your life, or at least, try to limit your exposure.

When you surround yourself with supportive people who don’t crush your dreams and ambitions, you are more likely to succeed in your endeavors. You gain strength and motivation from these types of people and are encouraged to continue on.

But remember, it is a two-way street, don’t forget to provide encouragement and support back, or you might have to find new company to keep!

Have a great Thursday!

Get Back Up!…My Thought for the Day…April 10, 2019

April 10, 2019

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
Confucius?

Get Back Up!

Although strangely put, this quote kind of says it all.  We’re all going to fall at some time or another, whether we get back up, that is the question.

Like a toddler learning to walk, we repeat this cycle over and over throughout our lives with every new thing we learn or embark on.  We’re all gonna fall a couple of times, it is only natural.

Our greatest glory is in our capacity and willingness to get back up and keep going.

So, a funny sidebar to this quote.  After I uploaded my graphic to the blog, I decided to check the wording of it, because it sounded strange.  I found that Confucius never did say this!

According to Matthew Haywood, Ph.D. Chinese Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2022) explains that

“the quote can be traced back to an English author impersonating a Chinese person quoting a proverb made by the author himself.”

Ha!

Regardless, the idea behind it is still good.

Have a great Wednesday!

My Thought for the Day…April 9, 2019…Attitude is Everything

suzygoebel.com/blog attitude
April 9, 2019

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”

Khalil Gibran

Attitude is Everything

Attitude is everything.  A good attitude gets things done, a bad one doesn’t, or does so poorly.  Attitude is a choice, every day we can choose to be upbeat and positive.  Even if we have to fake it until it’s real.

And the funny thing is, it works, and, it can even turn your entire day around.  On the other hand, a bad attitude makes you ‘off’ and is like tripping up the stairs.  You just keep tripping and you can’t seem to get it right.

You can have had the worst morning.  Stubbed your toe, spilled coffee on your shirt, got stuck in traffic.  But if you decide you don’t want to be grouchy all day, you can leave the bad at the door and start to fake a good mood.

Make a point of interacting with people, even if you don’t feel like it.  Before you know it, those events of the morning will have faded and you will be having a better day.

Choose your attitude, don’t let it choose you.  You decide to make it a great day.

My Thought for the Day…April 8, 2019…Encouragement

“Never discourage anyone…who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.”

Plato

Encouragement

We all learn at different speeds.  Some catch on quickly, others take a bit more time and encouragement but eventually get it.  It may be easy to think that the person that is not catching on as quick just isn’t going to work out, but don’t be so quick to judge.

Ability to catch on quickly doesn’t necessarily equate to work ethic and loyalty.  A lot of times people who catch on quickly also get bored quickly.  The person you encourage and invest more time into to help them succeed will also be more invested in the quality of their work, the job, and the team.

Encouragement costs you nothing and pays dividends in the end.

Have a great week.

My Thought for the Day…April 5, 2019…Attitude

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

-Henry Ford

Attitude

It is really amazing how much mindset and attitude can predict success, regardless of ability.  The grumblers usually remain grumbling and don’t go anywhere.  The one’s with positive attitudes are the ones who move.

Attitude is a choice.  Even if you’ve received more than your fair share of bad times, it is still up to you what your attitude will be when you get up, when you go out into the world.

One way I have found to change my attitude is through gratitude, for the small things, for the big things, for all things really.  Another way is listening or watching uplifting media, podcasts, or music.

And once you are out in the world, surround yourself with the positive people, not the grumblers.  The grumblers will only bring you down.  If that is not possible, plug your ear buds in and listen to something positive!  Feel good or feel crappy, you always have a choice.

Have a great Friday!

My Thought for the Day…April 4, 2019…Take the First Step!

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just to take the first step.”

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Take the First Step

It is easy to fall into that state of mind of fear or paralysis when contemplating starting something new because we can’t see the entire path, process, or outcome. It usually takes a leap of faith, just start and assume all will be well and things will fall into place, easier said than done, right?

We do this every day if you think about it. We get in our cars and assume they will take us to our destinations. Most of us have no idea how they work, they just do, and we assume we will safely get where we want to go, and we do.

Taking the first step can also be a barometer, the proverbial toe in the water… Just because you take a step in a new direction doesn’t commit you to that new direction, you might just be feeling the waters so to speak. But if you are paralyzed with fear, you may never know if this was a feasible option for you, or not. It might linger in your mind as a “could have been”, you will never know.

So, give it a chance and take the first step, whatever it might be. Do some research, take a class, talk it out with a trusted friend, or consult an expert in the field. Just knowing you tried puts you ahead of most people.

Have a great Thursday!

My Thought for the Day…April 3, 2019…Your Calling

suzygoebel.com/blog
April 3, 2019

“Your calling isn’t something that somebody can tell you about. It’s what you feel. It is the thing that gives you juice. The thing that you are supposed to do. And nobody can tell you what that it is. You know it inside yourself.”

Oprah Winfrey

Your Calling

I have always admired those who knew what their calling was and were doing it.  I have been on a mad search for mine for as long as I can remember.  “That thing that gives you juice.”

The only thing I ever remember giving me “the juice” was creating something visual, drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art.  I am hesitant to call it art, I guess, but that is my own baggage…

That was the place where I was happiest and would find I would lose time.  Forget to eat and drink even.  But I had long since written that off as something “acceptable,” that I could actually do for a living.

I now find creating these graphics for this blog gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction, now if I can just find a way to make them pay the bills!

Have a great Wednesday!

Make It Happen!…My Thought for the Day…April 2, 2019

make it happen suzygoebel.com/blog
April 2, 2019

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”

Michael Jordan

Make It Happen!

I am sure this quote describes all of us at one time or another.  We got caught up in wishful thinking:

“If wishes were fishes we’d all swim in riches.”

and

“If wishes were horses then beggars would ride,

If turnips were swords I’d have one by my side.

If ‘ifs’ and ‘ands’ were pots and pans

There would be no need for tinker’s hands!”

So how do we make it happen?  That’s an easy one, you just start.  One small action takes you from being a “wisher” to being a “doer.”  You are only one small action away!  And one small action snowballs into 2, 3, 4….

It’s a brand-new day, so make it happen!  Have a great Tuesday.
