What Is a Life Well Lived?…My Thought for the Day…April 29, 2019

“I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it.

I want to have lived the width of it as well.”
-Diane Ackerman

What Is a Life Well Lived?

I love this quote, although I am not entirely sure what it means.  I get a vague feeling of understanding that I can only think is what the author meant by this.  To me, it is definitely a thought-provoking quote.  Anybody can live the length of their life.  Just getting up and doing our daily activities will get us there.

But to live the width of it as well…  I am guessing this means going beyond our daily activities. Choosing to participate in life beyond the daily grind.  Cultivating friendships, hobbies, and interests that have nothing to do with our livelihoods and ambitions.

It is so easy to get the tunnel vision and only see a goal, or where we want to end up.  Or even worse, what is just on our plate today.  Sometimes, that is all we are capable of seeing in order to press on without getting too overwhelmed.  But the truth is, the richness is also in the journey.  The people and experiences along the way.

So, what makes a full life?  There are so many answers to that question.  And only the individual can answer that for themselves. None of us really knows if we will make it to tomorrow.  Are you living just the length of your life?

The Company You Keep…My Thought for the Day…April 11, 2019

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.

Small people always do that,

but really great make you feel that you too, can become great.”

Mark Twain

The Company You Keep

Be careful of the company you keep they say. I remember a saying from when I was a kid, ‘you can’t soar like an eagle if hang around with turkeys.’  It was hard to understand then, but I think it basically was what Mark Twain was saying.

Surround yourself with people who support your ambitions, people who support you. Remove the haters and the naysayers from your life, or at least, try to limit your exposure.

When you surround yourself with supportive people who don’t crush your dreams and ambitions, you are more likely to succeed in your endeavors. You gain strength and motivation from these types of people and are encouraged to continue on.

But remember, it is a two-way street, don’t forget to provide encouragement and support back, or you might have to find new company to keep!

Have a great Thursday!
