“Don’t let the past steal your present.”

-Terri Guillemets

Forward!

How do we keep moving forward when seemingly immobilized by the past?  Whenever I see this particular quote, I think of another, “Past performance is not indicative of future results.”  It makes me laugh a little.

But it is still hard to not be influenced by the past.  The key is balance, use the past as a tool to make a decision, but only as a tool.  Don’t let it overwhelm you where you are frozen and unable to make a decision.

I speak of this from extensive experience of being frozen and unable to make a decision.  Which I am finding is another symptom of Asperger’s.  And speaking of being frozen, the next quote I am reminded of is “Not to decide is to decide.” by Harvey Cox.  I can still see it plainly boxed out in a sidebar in my religion textbook from catholic grade school.  Funny it has stuck with me all these years; it must be important!

So how do we use the past simply as tool, and not let it steal our present?  I wish I knew!  Maybe simply being aware that this is a possibility?  Simply being aware when you go into that frozen state and realizing what is happening.  That you are being immobilized by the past, which is over, and really has no direct bearing on the now.

And finally, another quote I am reminded of, “Awareness is the first step…”  Yes, I suppose awareness IS the first step.  Only by being aware of our weaknesses can we move forward.

The Desire to Achieve…My Thought for the Day…May 22, 2019

“A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others”
Ayn Rand

The Desire to Achieve

Interesting quote today.  I am never quite sure what makes me pick a particular quote.  I search for quotes and grab the ones that strike a chord in me.  Then I create the graphic.  Most often, not really knowing what it is I am going to write about.

So, I am not even sure what this quote means, I do know I like it for whatever reason.  I have never been much of a competitive person, I am more the cheerleader type, cheering all on to win or achieve their goals.  I have never taken pleasure in ‘beating’ others or broadcasting the fact that I won.

Does this mean I am a creative person?  Does it mean creative versus destructive?  Is the desire to beat others an ultimately destructive desire?

What does it mean to you?  I’d really like to know!

Opportunities or Obstacles?…My Thought for the Day…May 13, 2019

Opportunities or Obstacles suzygoebel.com/blog

“If you believe it will work out, you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t, you will see obstacles.”
Wayne Dyer

Opportunities or Obstacles?

It is all about perspective isn’t it?  Are you a glass half full or a glass half empty sort?  Do you see opportunities in your life or obstacles? Of course, it is so much easier said than done.  Our outlook is programmed from birth by life and gets more hard wired the longer we live.

Overcoming a negative attitude can sometimes seem insurmountable, but it can be done.  One piece at a time, one step at a time.  Recognizing it is the first stage, and a hard one at that.  No one wants to believe they are a glass half empty type.  But acknowledgement is the first step. Then taking that negative thought or attitude and consciously turning it around.

This is hard at first and can seem overwhelming, but again, you take it a piece at a time.  It doesn’t happen overnight.  But it does happen.  As you consciously tackle negative thoughts, attitudes and beliefs and turn them around it becomes easier.  Like a muscle, your ability grows.

And before you know it, people will start seeing you as a more positive person.  And life seems to get a bit easier when it is fueled with positivity rather than negativity.  It is like having the wind at your back, the whole way.  And soon, you will be seeing opportunities rather than obstacles!

The Ripples We Make…My Thought for the Day…April 19, 2019

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of.

There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

– Fred Rogers

The Ripples We Make

So, I received the most wonderful message this morning right when I needed it.  My doubts about this blog have been plaguing me.  Just why am I doing this?  I had a great talk with a friend last night, who was very encouraging and supportive. After, I was feeling better about what am I doing, what I am putting out into the world, the ripples I am making.

Unfortunately, this morning, not so much.  But I made myself sit down with my laptop, to at least give it a shot.  And the most wonderful message came through from my friend, who I had spoken to last night.  She had run out to the store after our conversation and encountered some random person in line ahead of her.   He was talking on the phone and telling his friend that he had to pay for his items with change and hoped that the cashier wouldn’t hate him for it.

My friend overheard and asked the cashier if she could pay for his items.  The random guy was stunned, but when he realized what was happening said “I f*@!ing love people!”  She said she felt that I had built up the positivity in her to do that and she was just paying it forward, like a ripple effect of positivity.  What an amazing act of kindness!

To get this message this morning was just what I needed, and I knew the perfect quote to start with.  Everything we do in life has an impact on the people we meet, on people we may never even dream of, so why not make it a good one?  Not to say you have to buy things for people, unless you are moved to do so at the time of course.

What Ripples Will You Send Out?

A smile, a hello, a simple thank you.  That’s all it takes, and you can flip the experience that someone is having from a negative one to a positive one.  And the feeling you get from this shared positive experience is amazing, it lifts you up as well, and guess what, we all win.  How amazing is that?  Inside of all of us we have to the power to lift each other up and by doing this we lift ourselves up as well.

So make the choice to have a positive impact on those you encounter, and it will ripple out into the world!

Get Back Up!…My Thought for the Day…April 10, 2019

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
Confucius?

Get Back Up!

Although strangely put, this quote kind of says it all.  We’re all going to fall at some time or another, whether we get back up, that is the question.

Like a toddler learning to walk, we repeat this cycle over and over throughout our lives with every new thing we learn or embark on.  We’re all gonna fall a couple of times, it is only natural.

Our greatest glory is in our capacity and willingness to get back up and keep going.

So, a funny sidebar to this quote.  After I uploaded my graphic to the blog, I decided to check the wording of it, because it sounded strange.  I found that Confucius never did say this!

According to Matthew Haywood, Ph.D. Chinese Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2022) explains that

“the quote can be traced back to an English author impersonating a Chinese person quoting a proverb made by the author himself.”

Ha!

Regardless, the idea behind it is still good.

Have a great Wednesday!

My Thought for the Day…April 9, 2019…Attitude is Everything

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”

Khalil Gibran

Attitude is Everything

Attitude is everything.  A good attitude gets things done, a bad one doesn’t, or does so poorly.  Attitude is a choice, every day we can choose to be upbeat and positive.  Even if we have to fake it until it’s real.

And the funny thing is, it works, and, it can even turn your entire day around.  On the other hand, a bad attitude makes you ‘off’ and is like tripping up the stairs.  You just keep tripping and you can’t seem to get it right.

You can have had the worst morning.  Stubbed your toe, spilled coffee on your shirt, got stuck in traffic.  But if you decide you don’t want to be grouchy all day, you can leave the bad at the door and start to fake a good mood.

Make a point of interacting with people, even if you don’t feel like it.  Before you know it, those events of the morning will have faded and you will be having a better day.

Choose your attitude, don’t let it choose you.  You decide to make it a great day.

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

-Henry Ford

Attitude

It is really amazing how much mindset and attitude can predict success, regardless of ability.  The grumblers usually remain grumbling and don’t go anywhere.  The one’s with positive attitudes are the ones who move.

Attitude is a choice.  Even if you’ve received more than your fair share of bad times, it is still up to you what your attitude will be when you get up, when you go out into the world.

One way I have found to change my attitude is through gratitude, for the small things, for the big things, for all things really.  Another way is listening or watching uplifting media, podcasts, or music.

And once you are out in the world, surround yourself with the positive people, not the grumblers.  The grumblers will only bring you down.  If that is not possible, plug your ear buds in and listen to something positive!  Feel good or feel crappy, you always have a choice.

Have a great Friday!
