“Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you can imagine.”
-Roy T. Bennett

Believe in Yourself

Why is it so hard to be able to believe in yourself and what you are capable of?  I struggle with this daily.  Is it because I am too much in my head?  Do I think too much about how much braver I wish I could be, or where my talents and capabilities might be lacking in this moment?

Most of us will experience a lack of faith in our abilities from time to time.  It is normal and human.  But some of us, myself included, become somewhat paralyzed by this while others can brush it off and move forward.

There is no point in wishing we could be braver.  The only solution is to just be braver.  So, now you might be saying, ‘well, that’s my problem, thanks for your crap solution!’  I guess my point is to get out of your head and just do it, which is cliché but appropriate.

The reason some people can brush off their doubts and fears is because they don’t think about them too much.  The more you think about them, the more weight you give to them, and the harder they are to overcome.   I believe it is called ‘paralysis by analysis.’

Have you ever gone ahead and done something you didn’t think you could do?  Do you remember the amazing feeling after you accomplished it?  Draw on that!  Sometimes we just need to plunge ahead and have faith that all will work out.   And it usually does in one way or another.  Granted not always the way we had hoped, but usually to our benefit in the long run.

My Thought for the Day…April 4, 2019…Take the First Step!

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just to take the first step.”

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Take the First Step

It is easy to fall into that state of mind of fear or paralysis when contemplating starting something new because we can’t see the entire path, process, or outcome. It usually takes a leap of faith, just start and assume all will be well and things will fall into place, easier said than done, right?

We do this every day if you think about it. We get in our cars and assume they will take us to our destinations. Most of us have no idea how they work, they just do, and we assume we will safely get where we want to go, and we do.

Taking the first step can also be a barometer, the proverbial toe in the water… Just because you take a step in a new direction doesn’t commit you to that new direction, you might just be feeling the waters so to speak. But if you are paralyzed with fear, you may never know if this was a feasible option for you, or not. It might linger in your mind as a “could have been”, you will never know.

So, give it a chance and take the first step, whatever it might be. Do some research, take a class, talk it out with a trusted friend, or consult an expert in the field. Just knowing you tried puts you ahead of most people.

Have a great Thursday!

My Thought for the Day…April 3, 2019…Your Calling

“Your calling isn’t something that somebody can tell you about. It’s what you feel. It is the thing that gives you juice. The thing that you are supposed to do. And nobody can tell you what that it is. You know it inside yourself.”

Oprah Winfrey

Your Calling

I have always admired those who knew what their calling was and were doing it.  I have been on a mad search for mine for as long as I can remember.  “That thing that gives you juice.”

The only thing I ever remember giving me “the juice” was creating something visual, drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art.  I am hesitant to call it art, I guess, but that is my own baggage…

That was the place where I was happiest and would find I would lose time.  Forget to eat and drink even.  But I had long since written that off as something “acceptable,” that I could actually do for a living.

I now find creating these graphics for this blog gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction, now if I can just find a way to make them pay the bills!

Have a great Wednesday!

My Thought for the Day…March 23, 2019

“Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

-Albert Einstein

How many human potentials have been cut short because they were different?  How many great contributions to humanity were never realized for this very reason?  Every child has genius in them, unless it is snuffed out by those who would lack understanding.

In 1983 psychologist Howard Gardner defined 9 different types of intelligence, 9!!  They are:

What a wonderful and productive world it will be when our institutions can identify and nurture these intelligences in everybody!

Have a great Saturday!

My Thought for the Day…March 15, 2019

“Whatever you want in life, other people are going to want it too.  Believe in yourself enough to accept the idea that you have an equal right to it.”

-Diane Sawyer

There is more than enough to go around.  Believing we have equal right to it can be quite difficult for many of us.  Once we can accept we are worthy of what we want, the rest comes easy.  Or so I am told…

Have a great Friday, we made it again!

My Thought for the Day…March 5, 2019

“When the world does its level best to devalue me in ways that are nothing short of brutal, all it does is evidence my value”

-Craig D. Lounsbrough

This will happen.  Oh, maybe it’s not the world per se, (although sometimes it feels like it) it is usually just, I have found, jealous people who devalue you.

In the moment it can be hard to see their true purpose in the assault, but truly it is more a reflection of their low self-esteem than your true worth.  In truth their choice to assault you and attempt to degrade you does indeed evidence your value, for why else would they waste their time?
